Purchasing Tips
In addition to working with a licensed insurance agent, here are a few tips you should keep in mind when making a decision to purchase a life insurance product. More general information on purchasing life insurance can be found at LIFE (Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education).
- Take your time. Make sure you fully understand the type of policy you are considering and that you are comfortable with the agent, company and product.
- If you have questions ask! The decision is too important to take lightly or underestimate.
- Make sure the agent and company are licensed in the state in which you live.
- Answer all questions on the application thoroughly and honestly.
- Always make your check payable to the insurance company, not the agent.
- Inform your beneficiaries of the type of insurance and benefits you purchased.
- Review the copy of your application included with your policy. Notify your agent or the company immediately if there are errors.
- If another agent contacts you to cancel your policy and buy a new one, contact the agent who sold you the policy or the company. Certain surrender charges or penalties may apply.
- If you have a complaint about your agent or the insurance company, contact the customer service division at the company or the deptartment of insurance in your state.
- After your life insurance policy is approved, you will have a "free-look" period during which time you can change your mind and cancel the policy.
- Review your policy periodically to make sure that your current protection is adequate.
